The Remarkables: The Adventurers Guide to Queenstown’s Alpine Playground

Towering over the adventure capital of New Zealand, The Remarkables (or “Remarks” as the locals call it) is more than just a name, it’s a promise. This resort delivers a world-class alpine experience, famous for hosting the Freeride World Tour and boasting some of the steepest, most technical terrain in New Zealand. But don’t let that intimidate you. With a perfectly balanced mix of 30% beginner, 40% intermediate, and 30% advanced/expert trails, this mountain truly has something for everyone.

Spanning nearly 1,000 skiable acres and serviced by modern high-speed six-seater lifts, The Remarkables is designed for a fantastic day on the snow. The resort expertly separates different ability zones, ensuring everyone from first timers to experts can find their flow.

Key Resort Stats at a Glance:

  • Skiable Terrain: 385ha (950 acres)
  • Vertical: 468m (1,535ft)
  • Summit Elevation: 1,943m (6,375ft)
  • Average Snowfall: 290 cm annually (9.5ft)
  • Total Trails: 47

Getting There: Your Journey to the Base

The resort is a scenic 45 minute drive from Queenstown or 90 minutes from Wanaka. Be prepared: the first 10km is sealed, but the final 3km is an unsealed gravel road.

  • Driving Tip: This exposed, winding road can be treacherous in snow or fog. A 4WD with all-weather tyres is strongly advised, and carrying chains is often mandatory. The upper car park fills fast, so expect to park lower and take a short shuttle to the base.
  • No Car? No Problem: Regular bus and private transfer options are available from both Queenstown and Wanaka.

Navigating the Resort: Lifts, Base & Amenities

The compact base area houses everything you need: ticket office, ski school, rentals, and lockers. A unique feature is the large mesh safety fence near the Sugarbowl Express, decorated with carabiners; a perfect, secure spot to stash your backpack.

Thirsty On-Mountain? For a truly memorable experience, visit the Ice Bar near the top of the Curvey Basin Express on a fine day. It’s the perfect spot for an après-ski vibe with a view. Otherwise, all dining options are back at the base, and you are welcome to bring your own packed lunch.

When to Ski: Sun, Snow Conditions & Mountain Quirks

  1. Beat the Crowds: The Sugarbowl Express queue can get busy as it services the terrain parks and popular beginner/intermediate areas. Head to Shadow Basin for shorter lines and more challenging runs.
  2. Sun & Snow: With a mostly north-facing aspect, The Remarkables is a suntrap. This is glorious on a cold day but can lead to slushy, “sun-baked” snow in the spring afternoons.
  3. Check the Road & Weather: Mountain conditions change fast. Check the official resort alerts for road status and weather. It’s often wise to call it a day early to avoid a slow, congested drive down the mountain.

Snowmaking Assurance: The resort has extensive snowmaking on key beginner and intermediate trails, ensuring a good coverage even when nature needs a helping hand.

The Mountain: Terrain for Every Skier and Rider

The intuitive layout funnels all skiers back to a central, vibrant base area, making it easy for groups to meet up. Let’s break down the mountain by ability.

Beginner Bliss & Confidence-Building Greens

The day starts at the large, dedicated learning area at the base. From there, progress to the Alta Lift for gentle, wide-open greens like Alta Green and Turquoise. Ready for a bigger adventure? The Sugarbowl Express grants access to Casterway, a long, winding green trail that offers stunning views and a real sense of achievement.

Intermediate Cruising & Rolling Blues

Intermediate skiers are spoilt for choice. Warm up on the blues off the Curvey Basin Express, or head back to the Sugarbowl Express for longer, rolling blue and red trails. For those seeking more consistent pitch and fewer crowds, the Shadow Basin Express is your go-to, offering longer, steeper runs that will test and expand your skills.

Advanced & Expert: The Legendary Steeps

This is where The Remarkables earns its reputation. The Shadow Basin Express is the gateway to the resort’s most challenging terrain. Trails like Escalator offer a steep, sustained pitch with a north-facing aspect that preserves snow quality. Use The Highway traverse to access epic, advanced bowls. For the truly adventurous, hike-to terrain off Sugarbowl provides untouched lines (when conditions permit).

The Verdict: Who is The Remarkables For?

In short, everyone.

The Remarkables provides a brilliant mix of terrain that will keep mixed-ability groups entertained all day. Beginners have a safe space to learn before mingling with the park crowd on Sugarbowl. With its central base and diverse terrain, The Remarkables isn’t just a ski field, it’s the ideal alpine destination for your Queenstown adventure.
