Best Kept Secrets: Free Skiing, Meal Combos & Cash Tips

This is where Ogna Hotaka stands out. The resort leans into local hospitality with unique deals

  • The Birthday Hack: If you visit on your birthday, you ski for free.Simply bring proof of your birthdate to the ticket window. This is 100% legitimate and one of the best MTNhacks in Japanese skiing.
  • Lift & Meal Voucher Combo: Instead of buying a standard lift ticket, get the combo. You save money andsecure a great meal at Center Lodge.
  • 5-Hour Pass: Don’t need a full day? The 5-hour pass offers a small discount, ideal for afternoon arrivals.

Cash Warning: Credit cards are accepted at Center Lodge only (tickets + food). All other base restaurants are cash only. This resort caters to locals, so come prepared.

The Lift Note: All lifts are slow, fixed-grip pairs. Capacity is limited. Expect queues on holidays and weekends. The 2nd Romance Lift is long and has minimal elevation gain, but it’s your only access to the upper mountain.

Seasonal Guide: When to Go? January Powder vs Spring Slush

Because Ogna Hotaka sits in a valley, it offers shelter from harsh winds, making it excellent for families on cold days.

Season Conditions Crowds
Early Season (Dec) Base snow, southerly aspect impacts quality Very low
Peak (Jan-Feb) Best snow, sunny days, cold starts Moderate (busy weekends from Tokyo)
Spring (Mar+) Warmer, slushy afternoons Very low

Sleeping Close to the Slopes: Nearby Lodges with Free Resort Shuttles

No on-mountain lodging exists. But that’s not a problem

  • The resort website provides a list of nearby hotels and pensions.
  • Discounted lift tickets are available for guests of partner lodging.
  • Several nearby options offer shuttle services to the base (essential if you’re not driving).

Who is Ogna Hotaka For? (And Who Should Skip It)

Ogna Hotaka won’t win awards for size or extreme terrain. But it will give you something better: a stress-free, authentic Japanese ski day.

Best for:

  • First-timers and beginners wanting gentle, sheltered greens.
  • Intermediates looking for quiet groomers.
  • Road-trippers exploring Gunma by car.
  • Anyone celebrating a birthday – free skiing!
  • Skiers fleeing the tourist crowds of Nagano or Hokkaido.

Not ideal for:

  • Expert skiers seeking extreme terrain or long double blacks.
  • Travelers without a car – no public transport.
  • Those who need high-speed quads or gondolas.

Our verdict: The snow quality punches above its weight, the vertical drop keeps runs interesting, and if it’s your birthday, the drive from Tokyo is worth it. Or, it’s simply a worthy addition to your Gunma itinerary.
