The Advanced Skier’s Guide to Adventure in Winter Park & Mary Jane

You’ve mastered the blues. You crave steeps, deep snow, and technical challenges. Welcome to your paradise.

Winter Park Resort is a sleeper hit for expert skiers, boasting a staggering 52% of its terrain rated black diamond or double black. While only a fierce 3% is dedicated to extreme chutes, the mountain more than compensates with what it does best: world-class mogul runs and endless, epic tree skiing. This isn’t just a mountain; it’s a playground for the proficient. Here’s your tactical guide to skiing it like a local.

Start Smart: Choosing Your Base Camp

Your day begins with a crucial choice: Winter Park Base or Mary Jane Base?

  • For the Purist: Head to the Mary Jane Base. It’s tailored for drivers and smaller groups, with ample parking and direct access to the most iconic advanced terrain. You’ll bypass the family-friendly crowds and dive straight into the good stuff.
  • For Families & Shuttles: The Winter Park Base is still a fantastic starting point, especially if you’re using the resort bus or have a mixed-ability group. You can easily access challenging terrain from here to start your day.

For the Skilled Advanced: Groomers, Bumps & Glades

Warm up your legs and get a feel for the mountain on these classic runs.

Early Morning Groomers: Beat the crowds to the fresh corduroy. On the Mary Jane side, rip down Mary Jane and Sleeper before they get scratched up. Over at Winter Park, Cramner and Hughes are your best bets. (MTNhack: Always check the grooming report, as parts of Bradleys Bash or Balch are sometimes groomed).

The Bump Paradise: Mary Jane is famous for its moguls.

  • Outrigger and Balch: Iconic, challenging bump runs.
  • Over n Underwood: A perfect, gentler introduction to moguls.
  • Outhouse: A legendary, long mogul field with no easy exit. Commitment is required.
  • Phantom Bridge & Derailer: Two expert-level bump trails under the C Chair lift that are a true test of skill.
  • Trestle: A long, varied-pitch black diamond that holds snow beautifully. It’s often in the shade, so bundle up!

Gladed Tree Intro: Ease into the trees with Forever Eva and Johnstone Junction. For a fantastic, often quieter experience, don’t miss the trails off the Eaglewind Lift when conditions are right.

For the Adventurous Expert: Trees, Chutes & Hidden Gems

This is where Winter Park truly shines for the bold.

Above the Treeline: When the expert terrain is open, it’s time to get serious.

  • The Cirque: Tackle Cornice Canyon—a steep entry into a wide bowl. Be prepared for a long run-out and a multi-lift journey back.
  • Baldys Chute: A classic, challenging chute for experts.
  • Parry’s Peek: On a low-crowd day, the glades off Parry’s Peek (accessed via the Panoramic Express) are an absolute delight.

Elite Tree Skiing: Winter Park has some of the best tree runs you’ll ever find.

  • Explore the trees on either side of RailbenderOutrigger, and Bradleys Bash.
  • For a true local’s secret, look for the timber bridge in the trees to the skier’s left of Outrigger (if you can find it!).
  • The trees to the left of Sleeper often feature natural kickers and features.
  • The Eaglewind Lift area is a goldmine for untouched tree lines.

The best gems are often shared on a chairlift ride. Be friendly—you might just get a local to reveal their favourite secret stash.

Essential Advanced Skier Intel

  • Terrain Reality: While over half the mountain is black diamond, the double-black “chutes” are limited (3%) and often closed. The Cirque access is limited, making the extra-cost snowcat sled worth considering for multiple laps. Don’t be fooled, though—the phenomenal mogul trails and trees are what make this resort an expert’s dream.
  • Powder Day Strategy: Expect crowds. Denver locals and visitors alike flock here for fresh tracks. The Panoramic Express often starts late and gets busy. Sometimes, lapping the C Chair or runs off the Explorer Lift is more productive for finding untracked snow.
  • End-of-Day Exit: Avoid the crowds on your final run.
    • Parked at Mary Jane? Take Corona Way or Sleeper.
    • Ending at Winter Park Base? Hughes is your best bet to bypass the Village Way traffic.

Winter Park and Mary Jane offer an unpretentious, authentic, and deeply satisfying experience for the advanced skier. It’s a mountain that rewards exploration and technical prowess.
